Tradition Meets High-Performance – An In-Depth Conversation with Panagiotis Avramidis from MKB Motoren Manufaktur
Old Icons, New Power – A Look Behind the Scenes at MKB
In a world where industrial perfection and passion for classic automobiles rarely go hand in hand, there are companies that master this balancing act with flying colors. One such company is MKB Motoren Manufaktur from Winnenden. Specializing in engine and drivetrain restoration, high-performance engineering, and classic car refinement, it has built an international reputation over more than three decades. In this interview, we speak with Panagiotis Avramidis, the company’s managing director, about its historical heritage, technical achievements, and the future of the manufactory.
Jürgen Preuß: Panagiotis, thank you for taking the time for this conversation today. Let’s start at the beginning, with the origin and history of MKB Motoren Manufaktur.
Panagiotis Avramidis: Thank you, Jürgen. The history of our company is indeed closely linked to the history of motorsport itself. MKB Motoren Manufaktur was founded in 1989 – by none other than AMG legend Dipl.-Ing. Erhard Melcher, one of the central figures behind the legendary AMG engines. The “M” in our name doesn’t stand for Melcher by chance, but represents genuine technical DNA that has been part of our work from the very beginning. Erhard Melcher is considered one of the engine architects who shaped AMG for years. With this experience, he began to pursue engine building and vehicle refinement at the highest level. Gradually, MKB Motoren Manufaktur developed into what it is today: an internationally respected specialist for classic Mercedes and AMG vehicles.
Jürgen Preuß: That sounds like a strong technical foundation. How would you describe the company’s identity today?
Panagiotis Avramidis: If I had to sum up our identity in one phrase, it would be passion for technology, precision in execution, and dedication to detail. For over 30 years, we’ve been working for customers around the globe – for enthusiasts of
classic vehicles who have the highest standards. We’re not talking about interchangeable tuning measures here, but about profound, artisanal expertise. Vehicle restoration and performance enhancement aren’t just buzzwords for us – they’re the core of what we live every day.
Jürgen Preuß: You yourself have had an eventful professional career. How did you come to MKB Manufaktur, and what does this connection mean to you?
Panagiotis Avramidis: My roots also lie in the direct technical environment of AMG – more precisely, in the AMG engine and racing division. That’s where I completed my master craftsman examination and experienced and internalized the special characteristics of classic AMG engines not just theoretically, but practically. This experience was formative for me – not only professionally, but also with regard to the passion behind the technology. When the opportunity arose to take on responsibility at MKB, it was a logical step for me: here I can bring my expertise and technical understanding to a company that shares the same passion.

Jürgen Preuß: Many companies talk about “high-quality service.” What really sets MKB Motoren Manufaktur’s services apart from other providers?
Panagiotis Avramidis: The real difference lies in the depth of our technical understanding and our uncompromising commitment to individuality. MKB Motoren Manufaktur is far more than a workshop – it’s a highly specialized engineering team that understands engine building as precision craftsmanship. From the extensive restoration of complex drivetrains to the authentic restoration of classic Mercedes and AMG units to the development of performance-optimized high-performance solutions, we combine decades of experience with state-of-the-art technology. Whether historic engine icons or custom performance enhancements: every project is executed with the utmost care, technical finesse, and absolute dedication – individually, precisely, and always with the goal of elevating the character, performance, and value retention of the vehicle to a new level.
Jürgen Preuß: Can you give an example where your technical experience really made the difference?
Panagiotis Avramidis: We regularly receive vehicles that have previously been to other specialized workshops – and yet haven’t achieved the desired
performance or reliability. A typical example is classic AMG models where authentic restoration and simultaneous performance-enhancing measures are required without changing the character of the vehicle. This involves precise engine analysis, exact fine balancing, custom cylinder machining, or detailed adjustments to the exhaust system. In these cases, every tenth of a millimeter and every technical decision counts – and this is where we repeatedly see why our experience makes a real difference.
Jürgen Preuß: You mention customers all over the world. How important is international collaboration for your business?
Panagiotis Avramidis: It’s fundamental. The classic vehicle market is international – and we work with collectors and enthusiasts from Europe, North America, Asia, and other regions. These customers appreciate not only our technical know-how but also our open communication and collaboration. We listen, we provide comprehensive advice, and we set realistic goals for each project together with the customer. This closeness to the customer is what sets us
apart – and it creates the trust that many
international clients place in us.
Jürgen Preuß: A company is only as good as its team. How would you describe the work culture at MKB?
Panagiotis Avramidis: Our team is hand-picked and works with dedication and the utmost care. Everyone here brings technical understanding, workshop experience, and a passion for classic vehicles. At the same time, we all work on equal footing and exchange ideas intensively to develop solutions that really work. We value mutual respect and combine experience with the willingness to take on new technical challenges.
Jürgen Preuß: Finally, how do you see the future of MKB Motoren Manufaktur? What do you want to develop further?
Panagiotis Avramidis: Our focus is clear: we’re consistently developing custom technical excellence for classic vehicles. In doing so, we combine classic engine-building know-how with modern high-performance engineering, expand international partnerships, and invest strategically in young talent who bring fresh perspectives. In a time when classic automobiles are being newly appreciated as cultural assets and emotional heritage, we understand our mission to be carrying their fascination, performance, and reliability into the future – in harmonious interplay between tradition and modern technology.
MKB Motoren Manufaktur is far more than a classic workshop: it’s a place where enthusiasm for technology, historical awareness, and artisanal precision come together. Under the leadership of Panagiotis Avramidis, the company stands for unique expertise in the field of classic Mercedes and AMG vehicles and for a vision that combines technical excellence with personal service.
