Lara’s Garage: From C43 to C55: A Rebuild Done Right

Some projects start with a plan. This one started with a feeling: This C43 shouldn’t just drive again. It should feel the way it always should have. So we decided to completely rebuild it, and in the middle of it all was the idea that wouldn’t let us go: out with the 4.3-liter, in with the big 5.5-liter heart from the C55.

An engine that just fits
Anyone who has driven both side-by-side knows the moment: The C43 is nice, but the C55 simply has more to offer: more thrust, more depth in sound, more of exactly the feeling that makes you fall in love with these cars. For us, it was clear: If we’re going to completely rebuild this C43, then it has to be with the engine it always deserved.

The right partner by your side
With a project of this magnitude, we wanted no surprises.
That’s why DEKRA expert Lauritz Kampert was on board from the start, not as a mandatory appointment at the end, but as a sparring partner from the very first idea.
Together, we clarified early on what was important to ensure that everything truly fit together in the end: the engine, the paperwork, and the registration.

Handcrafted at Lara’s Garage
And then it began. The old engine had to come out, the new one went in, and with it
a whole new piece of character moved into this car. At Lara’s Garage, work was done and checked repeatedly, with the care such a project simply deserves. This kind of work isn’t visible in the car later, but you can feel it in every kilometer.

The Test: Inspection
After the conversion came the moment of truth. Lauritz Klemm examined the vehicle precisely and thoroughly, taking no shortcuts. For us, this wasn’t a bureaucratic hurdle, but the final step that turns a passion project into a real car that you can drive without a bad conscience.

And then: the Registration
In the end, the new engine was registered in the papers, the point at which bolts and dreams become official. You no longer have to doubt at the next inspection or fear unpleasant questions from the insurance company. It’s simply a C43 that now beats with the heart of a C55, and papers that confirm exactly that.

For us at Lara’s Garage, that’s the real core of every project: not losing enthusiasm while doing things right. That’s exactly the kind of car we wanted to build, and that’s exactly what it became.

Valuation: The Basis for Insurance Coverage
With the registration, the conversion is officially complete, but the project is not yet finished for DEKRA. A vehicle that has been completely rebuilt and equipped with a different engine can hardly be assessed using standard list values, as it has moved too far from the series production vehicle. It is precisely for such cases that DEKRA prepares a manual valuation report, documenting the rebuild, restoration work, and engine swap, and creating a realistic, comprehensible market value based on comprehensive market research.

For our insurance partner OCC, this report is precisely the basis for properly classifying the vehicle at all. Without reliable proof of condition and value, such an individually built vehicle is difficult to insure adequately. With the DEKRA valuation report in hand, however, it is black and white what this C43 is truly worth today.

KNOW-HOW

An engine swap of this magnitude is not a conversion for which there is a ready-made parts certificate off the shelf. That’s precisely why such a project needs a partner from the outset who knows what matters, and DEKRA took on exactly this role in this project.

Preparation: Clarity before the first wrench
Even before the engine was moved, DEKRA expert Lauritz Kampert was firmly involved in the project. Instead of waiting for the conversion and hoping everything would fit in the end, it was clearly agreed from the beginning which proofs and documents would be needed later. This early involvement is precisely the strength that DEKRA plays out in such projects: knowing where the stumbling blocks lie before they become a problem.

Conversion: A reliable contact person in the background
While work was being done at Lara’s Garage, DEKRA remained present in the background: as a point of contact for all questions that inevitably arise during a conversion of this depth. This ensured that no component was installed that could not be registered later.

Inspection: The moment that counts
After the work was completed, DEKRA’s true expertise came into play: the individual assessment. Because no prefabricated test scheme exists for this conversion, the entire vehicle had to be evaluated, not just the engine itself. DEKRA is the right address for such cases: experienced experts who can assess a vehicle as a whole, instead of just
ticking boxes on a checklist.

Registration: The conclusion everything leads to
In the end, there was the report that formed the basis for correcting the vehicle documents. Without this report, the registration office could not have registered anything. With it, the conversion became a vehicle that is officially allowed to drive with its new heart.

From the first conversation to the signature on the report: DEKRA not only accompanied this project but guided it in the right direction from the start.
